A polygraph is an examination that records physiological activity—typically breathing, cardiovascular activity, and skin conductivity—while a person answers a structured set of questions. The goal is to assess whether the person shows stronger reactions to specific relevant questions compared to comparison questions.
Not literally. A polygraph measures physiological responses that can be associated with stress or concern. Examiners use validated testing formats and scoring methods to interpret whether responses are more consistent with truthfulness or deception.
Accuracy depends on the exam type, the quality of the pre-test interview, question
wording, the examinee’s condition, and the examiner’s methods. In general, properly
conducted specific-issue polygraph exams (focused on a particular incident) tend to be more accurate than broad “screening” exams. Polygraph exams are about 90%
accurate. They are not 100% indicative of truth or deception, only a probability of truth
or deception.
A properly conducted exam should not include “gotcha” questions. The examiner will review and explain the relevant questions with the examinee beforehand.
People online claim countermeasures work, but examiners are trained to detect atypical patterns and chart features associated with countermeasures. Attempts to manipulate the test can lead to an inconclusive result or termination of the exam.
